The event will include giveaways and live entertainment. In addition, the lounge’s full dinner menu is available that evening.

Tiny and Dorothy Zehnder, 1959

Bavarian Inn Remembers Founder William “Tiny” Zehnder

Frankenmuth patriarch would have turned 100 on April 6

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – March 25, 2019 –  April 6, 2019 is a special day at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and the Bavarian Inn Lodge, because it marks the 100th birthday of the late William “Tiny” Zehnder, founder of the restaurant and driving force behind Frankenmuth’s transformation into “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.”

Tiny’s journey to Frankenmuth’s patriarch began in 1950, when the Zehnder family purchased Fischer’s Hotel, which sat across the street from his family’s restaurant. Tiny and his young wife Dorothy (a former waitress at Fischer’s) became the managers of Fischer’s, and immediately set about making improvements. But despite a modernized kitchen, improved building design and more, the restaurant still struggled for survival.

Instead of giving up and closing the restaurant, Tiny and his family decided to expand. In 1959, Fischer’s Hotel was renamed the “Bavarian Inn” in keeping with that instantly recognizable architecture and design that was Tiny’s idea and is the hallmark of Frankenmuth today.

As the restaurant and the town around it grew, Tiny continued to work passionately for nearly 50 years, both expanding his restaurant and encouraging other Frankenmuth businesses to adopt the Bavarian theme. Tiny resigned from active management of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant in 2004, but he remained Chairman of the Board of Bavarian Inn, Inc. (the umbrella entity for all Bavarian Inn properties) for the rest of his life.

While he passed away at age 87 in 2006, there’s no doubt that his legacy lives on through the family-run business and the small town it calls home.

“Tiny was called Mr. Frankenmuth, and is the reason Frankenmuth has the German architecture we do,” said Martha Zehnder Kaczynski, Vice President at Bavarian Inn Lodge and Tiny’s granddaughter. “He was doing ‘Branding’ before it had a name. He implemented ‘Farm to Table’ before it was a trend. Tiny was definitely a man ahead of his time.”

Today, Bavarian Inn, Inc. includes Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Bavarian Inn Lodge, Frankenmuth River Place Shops, and Frankenmuth Gift Shop Inc.

Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Lodge employees team up to help those in need

Volunteer campaigns raise more than $23,000 for charities in 2018

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – March 13, 2018 – Through their respective campaigns, team members at Bavarian Inn Restaurant and the Bavarian Inn Lodge raised more than $23,500 in 2018 to benefit employee-selected charities.

Bavarian Inn Restaurant raised $15,325 in 2018 through its more than 32-year-old Company Giving Program. The benefiting charity is Wings of Mercy, which provides air transportation to distant medical facilities for patients who can’t afford to fly. Learn more at www.wingsofmercy.org.

The year-long campaign concluded at the end of December and the grand total for fundraising was announced at the post-holiday team member party on January 7. According to Michelle Solgat, co-chairperson of this year’s Bavarian Inn Restaurant’s Company Giving Program, team members raised funds for Wings of Mercy through voluntary payroll deduction, candy sales, a holiday open house event and other activities throughout the year. “Bavarian Inn Restaurant,” Solgat added, “has over 400 caring team members who give so generously each year to help those in need. We look forward to an exciting year of giving in 2019.”

Bavarian Inn Lodge team members raised $1,435.50 to be donated to the Child Abuse Network, $1,378 to the American Cancer Society, and $1,285 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Coupled with dollar-for-dollar company matching funds, the campaign was able to raise $8,197 for the three charities.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that Bavarian Inn Lodge team members have surpassed the previous year’s donation totals. Total contributions rose 21 percent from 2017 levels.

Past charities aided by the Bavarian Inn Company Giving Programs include the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, Hospice for Hope, Special Olympics, Special Days Camp and Saginaw Habitat for Humanity.

Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn Lodge Helps Provide Flint Residents with Sweet Dreams

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. March 7, 2019 – Several charities help provide comfort to struggling families every year by delivering furniture to those in need. These charities recently helped the Bavarian Inn Lodge find new homes for furniture left over from a recent remodel.

One charity that assisted with this was St. Frances Prayer Center, an organization that serves Flint residents who are compromised by injustice or poverty. The Prayer Center delivers 5-12 beds per week to homes in need. A volunteer heard that the Bavarian Inn Lodge would be replacing beds and helped to get those beds to people in need.

Volunteer Joe Buffa helped coordinate the donation to St. Francis Prayer Center, picked up the items from the Lodge, and assisted in making deliveries to homes in the northern Flint area.

“These donations are getting children off the floor,” said Buffa.

Edna Kujawski at Our Lady Consolata Parish, another charity that helped the Lodge with this effort, confirmed this. “One man said his son was thanking him after the first night he slept on it,” she said.

Another charity that benefited from this donation was Toni’s Lost & Found. In the end, the Lodge donated a total of 90 beds, 145 banquet chairs, 85 lamps and one sofa sleeper to the local charities.

New ‘Ice Haus’ attraction debuts at Bavarian Inn Lodge

Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings will feature opportunity to explore delightful Frankenmuth winter experience

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Feb. 4, 2019 – A new feature being offered this year by the Bavarian Inn Lodge is expected to stand out, even among regular visitors to the Frankenmuth area: outdoor “igloos” that guests can enjoy food or drink in during winter months.

The “Ice Haus” experience includes a visit to one of three transparent domed structures where food and drink will be served as part of what has become a legendary level of Bavarian Inn Lodge hospitality. The igloos are located in Schnitzelbank Biergarten, in front of the Bavarian Inn Lodge.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, the Ice Haus experience is a “reservations only” opportunity. Reservations can be made starting at 4:30 p.m., and are available through April 30, weather permitting.

Drop-in guests are welcome at all other times, although there is no service available during drop in. Guests are, however, welcome to visit the Lorelei Lounge, Oma’s Restaurant, or Martha’s Gift Shop to purchase food, beverages and snacks to take and enjoy in the Ice Haus.

“Igloos” are popping up all over Michigan this year. When Lodge President Judy Zehnder Keller did research on these igloos with her 7-year-old grandson Jacob, they knew that they’d be perfect to bring to Frankenmuth — with typical Bavarian flair. The two of them, along with three members of management, visited one to “test out” the igloo environment.

The three igloos are named after the colored lights that they’re decorated with: The Weiss Ice Haus (white), the Blau Ice Haus (Blue), and the Gruen Ice Haus (Green). Each structure is decorated with a different furniture floorplan.

The unique experience does come with a few “standard” rules, including that the Ice Haus be a smoke-free environment.

No outside food or beverages may be brought into the igloos, in accordance with Michigan Liquor Control Commission regulations.

To reserve your Ice Haus, call 989-652-7200.
