Frankenmuth River Place Shops host 10th annual Dog Bowl 2016

GreatdogcatchC

•    World’s largest Olympic-style event for dogs
•    Expected to draw 50,000 humans, over 5,000 dogs

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. May 6, 2016 – Do you have a sporty Sheltie, an athletic Aussie, or a rip-roaring Retriever in your house? All breeds of dogs and their owners can come out and play at the annual Dog Bowl 2016 this Memorial Day Weekend—Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. —at Frankenmuth River Place Shops in Frankenmuth, Mich.

Friends, family and, of course, dogs will have a great time participating or spectating this unusual, fun-filled, free admission event. It is the world’s largest Olympic-style event for dogs.

This year, something even more special will be taking place—the wedding of Dean Baber and Anne Hennion, a couple who knew each other more than 40 years ago but then became separated (as can happen with “teen love”). Now reunited, they are getting married, by special request, at this year’s Dog Bowl (the ceremony is Saturday at 2 p.m and “all friends, 2 legged and 4 legged, are invited to attend.”)

Michael Zehnder, General Manager of the Bavarian Inn Lodge and Chairman of the Dog Bowl event, is both thrilled for the couple and looking forward to a family weekend filled with the potential for great memories. “With or without a dog, visitors will have a great time enjoying these dog Olympics.”

Dog Bowl 2016 is a free family event, featuring more than 29 events and competitions, with 22 events for pets and their owners to join in on. Whether it’s watching dogs nearly break world records at the DockDogs Distance Diving Competition, rocking with the Rock ‘N’ Roll K-9’s Performance Team or enjoying Silly Pet Tricks, everyone will find something to enjoy at this year’s event. New activities at this year’s Dog Bowl include American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen and United Kennel Club (UKC) Socialized Pet Obedience testing each day (see details below).

Learn more and download a complete activities schedule by visiting http://www.dogbowlfun.com.

Dog Bowl 2016 events include:

Dock Dogs Distance Diving Competitions – Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Several world records were nearly broken during last year’s competition!  Children love to stand poolside to literally “feel” the action as they are sprayed by the resulting splashes. All competitors are strongly encouraged to pre-register online at www.dockdogs.com. On-site registration will be available as long as open slots remain.

Barn Hunt – Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. $5 fee. An exciting new AKC-sanctioned sport, dogs use their hunting instincts to search through a course of straw bales to signal their owner when a rat is found. The rat will be unharmed and encased in a tube.

Disc Dog Competitions, considered by many spectators as the highlight event of the weekend, will be expanded this year to include two World Qualifying Disc Dog Competitions. On May 28, the Skyhoundz U.S. Open Qualifier will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (www.skyhoundz.com). May 29 brings the Ashley Whippet Invitational (www.ashleywhippet.com). More than 80 dogs will compete as they demonstrate a variety of skills. Some are set to music, while other challenges are for distance and speed. Judges score on the originality and skill of both the dog and the handler.

Doggie Dash De Lure Races – Daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Watch professionally trained dogs race through an obstacle course chasing a lure pulled by ropes and pulleys for the fastest times. If your dog likes to chase squirrels, they can attempt the course, too.

Agility Course includes demonstrations and various competitions daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested in trying their “paw” at agility courses are welcome and will have the opportunity to be instructed by professional trainers.

Annual Canine Cruise on the Cass River begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 28. Humans can join for a $3 fee; dogs are free. Pre-registration is required as it is limited to the first 75 dogs, however the Bavarian Belle allows dogs on any of their boat tours.

Police K-9 Demonstrations – Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the River Place Shops Field. The Saginaw Valley Police Canine Association and BlueLine Police K-9 will exhibit the world of police K-9’s. Narcotics detection, handler protection and criminal apprehension will be demonstrated at this event.

Rock ‘N’ Roll K-9’s Performance Team will perform tricks, relay racing, limbo competitions and choreographed obedience routines and more – all to a Rock ‘N’ Roll musical show. Performance times are Saturday 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The Paws With A Cause Demonstration – 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Festival Platz. Spectators will witness a trained PAWS Assistance Dog in action and learn about what the dogs are trained to do.

Border Collie Sheep Herding Demonstrations – Saturday and Sunday at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. The demonstrator selects children from the audience to attempt to herd sheep better than one Border Collie. Border Collies will demonstrate their skill set and instincts as they control and move a herd of sheep within a six-acre fenced area.

Annual Pet Parade – Saturday at 1p.m. Come join the parade with your dog! It starts in the south entrance parking lot of River Place Shops and travels north on Main Street, then east over Bavarian Inn’s Wooden Covered Bridge and ends at the east parking lot. Spectators are invited to bring lawn chairs and view the parade from sidewalks along the route.

Enter your dog into the Best Canine Costume Contest – 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (immediately following the pet parade, approximately 1:30 pm). This entertaining event blends the “creativity” of owners with their pets’ “tolerance” for wearing the costume in public.

Visit the Festival Platz Stage Saturday, May 28 at 1:45 p.m. to hear the stories of the winners for the 2016 Dog Bowl King and Queen Award.

Watch the debut of the Doggie Fashion Show at the Festival Platz Stage on Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. This is the place to check out the latest in furry fashion.

Dog owners have the opportunity to show off to the public the unique (silly) tricks they have taught their canine at the Silly Pet Tricks event at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Dog owners can sign up onsite.

Is your dog fast?  Sign up on site for the 25 Yard Small Doggie Fun Run Race on Saturday at 3 p.m. or the 50 Yard Big Doggie Fun Run Race on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Wiener Dog Races will be held for the hottest little hounds in town at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Festival Platz Stage. All wiener dogs are welcome. Bring your dog and register at 4 p.m. on the day of the event.
AKC Canine Good Citizen testing/ UKC Socialized Pet Obedience Test (SPOT) – The AKC Canine Good Citizen as well as the UKC Socialized Pet Obedience Test recognizes dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. These programs stress responsible dog ownership and basic obedience training for dogs. Testing for a small fee will be offered both days from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Dog Bowl 2016 brings the return of the Selfie Stations. The stations will be set up for owners to take pictures with their dogs.

More than 20 dog rescue agencies from across Michigan will be attending and looking for homes for many of their “prized pooches.”

Dog Bowl 2016 will also host more than 50 exhibitors offering unique pet-related products and services, inflatable games for children, and face painting for a small fee.

‘Balloons Over Bavarian Inn’ Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Launches of Lighter Than Air Craft on Memorial Weekend

BalloonsoverBavarianInniscelebratedinFrankenmutheachMemorialDayWeekend

Annual free event a Bavarian Inn Lodge tradition

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. May 5, 2016 – In what has become a popular annual event, some of the most accomplished hot air balloon pilots from across the Midwest will take to the skies over Frankenmuth this Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30, 2016) for “Balloons Over Bavarian Inn.”

The weekend, with the fun it typically brings, is also a competitive one for balloonists, with a series of flights starting Friday evening (May 27), continuing on Saturday and Sunday, and culminating on Monday, May 30. The balloon events are co-sponsored by Bavarian Inn Lodge and Gordon’s Foodservice.

Spectators will be able to experience balloon launches and flyovers at Frankenmuth River Place Field each morning and evening of Memorial Day Weekend. A full schedule of the Balloons Over Bavarian Inn event, which will be held in conjunction with Dog Bowl 2016, can be found online at http://frankenmuthriverplace.com/balloons-over-bavarian-inn/.  Follow the action on Facebook by liking “Balloons Over Bavarian Inn” & Frankenmuth Hot Air Balloon Glow Village. Twitter Updates @BalloonsInMuth. Admission to balloon events is free.

The entire staff at the Bavarian Inn Lodge looks forward to hosting the event.

“This is one of our most popular happenings,” said Jim Engel, chief operating officer. “We’ve been able to attract some of the most proficient (and competitive) balloon pilots in the region, including competitors from three surrounding states and from as far away as Iowa.”

This marks the 10th anniversary of balloons flying competitively over the skies of Frankenmuth. Seven of the pilots have flown every year since the event’s inception.

Derrick Jones, the competition director for Balloons Over Bavarian Inn, says the popularity of the event has a lot to do with the family friendly features for which Frankenmuth is known.

Jones states, “It has been a joy to bring the ballooning community together in Frankenmuth. This is the first ballooning event of the season each year and what better place for a reunion of friends than Frankenmuth!”

Spectators will experience the village of balloons at the Balloon Glow Event on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings at River Place Field, giving them an opportunity to walk amongst 15 tethered hot air balloons that glow in the evening sky. Spectators can meet the pilots and crew, get autographs and even take pictures with their children inside or next to the pilot and his basket.

Piloting hot air balloons is a growing sport that is sophisticated and technical. The use of websites to track wind speeds and directions for every thousand foot level combined with the use of GPS technology allows pilots to better target their destination. This brings an unparalleled precision to the sport. During the morning and evening flights, the pilots will navigate their balloon to certain targets, placed and assigned to them by the officials.

Bavarian Inn Serving as Host Hotel for
The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America Show in Frankenmuth

May 2-7 Event is Example of How Appealing to Unique Needs is Paying Off

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – April 21, 2016 – The Bavarian Inn Lodge is rolling out the proverbial red carpet as the official hotel for the upcoming 2016 Michigan Berner Classic, to be held May 2-7 in Frankenmuth at Heritage Park, which is adjacent to the hotel.

The event is but one example of how one of Michigan’s premier resort locations has turned Frankenmuth into a “city of choice” for national and regional specialty dog shows, including this latest one.

While Frankenmuth is known for its charm, family-style chicken dinners, and festivals, the Bavarian Inn Lodge has been working hard to form partnerships with several specialty breed dog clubs, among them the Bernese Mountain Dog Club.

While many other hotel-resort properties forbid or discourage dogs as guests, the Bavarian Inn Lodge takes the time to work with specialty dog show organizers, taking into consideration the time of year the event is scheduled, days of the week, and the number of guest rooms to be booked by owners, handlers, and judges. Dogs are permitted at the Lodge only for these specialty show events (unless they are service dogs for registered guests).

Other breeds with which the Bavarian Inn Lodge and Convention Center has worked with include the Newfoundland Club of America, Leonberger Club of America, and several clubs representing owners of Scottish Deerhounds, Italian Greyhounds, and Portuguese Water Dogs, to name a few.

The special treatment accorded by the Bavarian Inn Lodge to dog show guests is the reason show organizers keep coming back. The Lodge Housekeeping Department implements a series of unique procedures to adjust all guest rooms with “show dogs,” assuring a pristine room for the next arriving guest.

In addition to serving as the host hotel, the Bavarian Inn Lodge helps connect specialty dog show organizers to nearby venues for their events through the Frankenmuth Parks and Recreation Department. There, organizers may choose from the expansive Harvey Kern Pavilion, Heritage Park, and the picturesque Cass Riverfront for grooming and staging areas, show rings, and vehicle and RV parking.

The Bavarian Inn Lodge is within a short driving distance from Flint Bishop International Airport and MBS Airport in Saginaw, and within easy walking distance to a host of attractions, restaurants, and shopping. The Lodge itself offers dog show guests a wide range of dining and recreation options, making it a special place to be on the canine show calendar.

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Feb. 10, 2016 – Since first opening its doors to guests in 1986, the Bavarian Inn Lodge has been wishing a hearty “willikommen” to hundreds of thousands of visitors to Frankenmuth – one of Michigan’s top tourist destinations. Today, Feb 10 and continuing throughout the year, the lodge, together with its 350 employees, is observing its 30th anniversary of providing old-world hospitality in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere.

Since its opening, the lodge has embarked on and completed seven major property project investments totaling more than $40 million, with the latest, a $400,000 upgrade to 55-inch HDTV receivers in all of its guest rooms. Starting out with 100 guest rooms in 1986, the lodge now encompasses 360 European-themed guest rooms, including whirlpool and family suites. A single swimming pool back in 1986 (which is now reserved for adults guests only) has grown to become one of Michigan’s largest indoor water park hotels with the expansive Family Fun Center, housing two dramatic waterslides, three pools and two whirlpools.

The expanded Family Fun Center includes 150 video and redemption games, a two-story children’s play village and a recently redesigned Willy’s Kingdom indoor mini-golf course.

Over the years, the Bavarian Inn Lodge added two lounges and two restaurants (decorated with authentic German woodcarvings) to provide guests a variety of dining and entertainment options. In true resort style, the lodge hosts year-round nightly entertainment, together with weekend family karaoke fun.

In addition, the lodge – situated on seven acres of gardens and lush lawns – has become a popular central destination for a variety of family events, such as weddings, reunions and weekend getaways. Business meeting and convention planners have named the lodge a favorite for comfortable conference space, and the amenities that make for successful business events. The lodge has logged 1.25 million room-nights since its opening and has earned a top rating on TripAdvisor®.

“Our goal since our beginning has been to make every stay positively memorable for each and every guest,” says Bavarian Inn Lodge President Judy Zehnder Keller. “We’ve been proud to serve so many generations of families who return to stay with us, and look forward to continuing to provide the best possible lodging experience.” She recalls the opening of the hotel in 1986 didn’t come without some last-minute, on-the-run, preparations, including moving her home’s  living room furniture to the lobby when the ordered furniture hadn’t arrived in time, and emptying her family’s kitchen pantry of cereals to fill out the breakfast menu. “Now, 30 years later,” she says, “we can all laugh about it.”
