FRANKENMUTH, Mich. May 15, 2017 — If you’re looking for a fun and stress-free way to spend your Memorial Day Weekend, Frankenmuth River Place Shops has you covered with two family-friendly events featuring free general admission.
Balloons Over Bavarian Inn is a Bavarian Inn tradition that many look forward to all year. Starting Friday, May 26, hot air balloonists from all over the Midwest will take to the skies over Frankenmuth. Spectators will be able to experience the launches and flyovers until Monday, May 29.
But spectators won’t just be watching these balloons from afar. At night, Frankenmuth transforms into the Village of Balloons, where guests can walk among 15+-plus inflated and tethered balloons, interacting with the pilots and crew.
Meanwhile, the 11th Annual Dog Bowl is gearing up to see 5,000 dogs running, jumping, and diving all over Frankenmuth. Happening on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, this event is the perfect thing for any dog owner — or dog lover.
If you have a dog, they can compete in a number of events, including Dock Dogs Distance Diving Competitions, Barn Hunt, Disc Dog Competitions, Agility Course, Wiener Dog Races, Pet Retail Vendors, and more! Or you can just watch as these energetic pups compete for the prize. This family fun event is said to be the world’s largest Olympic-style event for dogs, with most events free of charge.
Both of these events are in their 11th year, and are well-loved in their respective circles. Balloons over Bavarian Inn provides a fun, competitive atmosphere for balloonists, many of whom have been flying every year since the event began. And there are many dog lovers who have had the Dog Bowl marked on their calendar for months.

Frankenmuth’s ‘Grandpa Tiny’s Farm’ welcomes new managers
Planting the seeds for May 1 grand reopening
FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – April 3, 2017 – Grandpa Tiny’s Farm, a working heritage farm and longtime visitor attraction in “Michigan’s Little Bavaria,” is getting ready to welcome guests for the new season, and is now under new management.
Jonathan and Wendy Winkel of Frankenmuth have been named the new managers of the farm, once owned and operated by the late William “Tiny” Zehnder, who with his wife Dorothy, founded the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, which Dorothy continues to operate to this day. The farm is owned by the William and Dorothy Zehnder Foundation, and was formerly managed by the Ed and Lillian Sergent family, who recently retired.
“We’re excited to keep the heritage and traditions of Grandpa Tiny’s Farm alive with our array of barnyard animals – baby chicks, goats, rabbits, sheep – and some other surprises coming this May,” said Wendy Winkel, pointing out that “Tiny” Zehnder worked on the farm regularly, even while running The Bavarian Inn full-time, out of a passion for agriculture and love of growing food.
Grandpa Tiny’s Farm features tractor-pulled wagon tours, a petting zoo, museum, granary, fitness trail and a farm store selling seasonal products, including produce, eggs, and honey. While the 60-acre farm now produces a variety of crops such as corn, oats, wheat, alfalfa and pumpkins, vegetable gardens and a u-pick lavender field await visitors for the 2017 season.
In addition, the Winkels are planning major exterior and interior renovations to the main farm building, known as “Tiny’s Big Barn,” to enable the site to host events like weddings, parties and family reunions.
“The educational part of the farm is what I’m most excited about,” said Wendy Winkel. “We have been hobby farmers for many years, and I can’t wait to show everyone how even the smallest of yards can produce food, even if you don’t wish to keep bees and chickens in your own yard.”
Monday, May 1 is the grand reopening date for the farm, located at 7775 Weiss Road in Frankenmuth. Visitor hours are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. daily through October, and weekends only in November and December. Learn more at www.grandpatinysfarm.com.

Bavarian Inn Employees Raise Funds to Help Others
Volunteer Campaigns Raise $18,500 for Charity in 2016
FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 30, 2017 – Through its more than 30-year-old Company Giving Program, Bavarian Inn Restaurant employees raised a total of $12,586 to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, assisting the agency in its mission to provide nourishment to the hungry in 22 Michigan counties. The total was announced and a check for the entire amount was presented to the charity at a post-holiday employee party, Jan. 9.
According to Joe Putnam, 2016 chairperson of the Bavarian Inn Company Giving Program, the funds were raised through voluntary payroll deduction, candy sales, a holiday open house event and other activities throughout the year that were coupled with $5,000 in matching funds from the Frankenmuth landmark. “Bavarian Inn Restaurant has over 400 caring team members who give so generously each year to help those in need,” he said.
Bavarian Inn Marketing Manager Mandy Borsenik explained that, based on the purchasing power of the Food Bank, the group’s 2016 donation equates to approximately $75,516 in food to help the less fortunate. She also listed past charities aided by the Company Giving Program: Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, Hospice for Hope, Special Olympics, Special Days Camp and Saginaw Habitat for Humanity.
At the same time, nearly 300 employees at the nearby Bavarian Inn Lodge raised a total of $2,959 in 2016 employee donations that were matched dollar-for-dollar by the Lodge for a total contribution of $5,918. By employee choice, the contributions were awarded to: Child Abuse Network, American Cancer Society and Make a Wish Foundation.
“The Bavarian Inn Zehnder family has always encouraged charitable contributions to the local community so it is no surprise that our employees have voluntarily followed suit in helping the less fortunate among us,” commented Lodge Marketing Manager Joanna Stratman. “We expect to see similar efforts in 2017,” she concluded.
